Summer is made for relaxation. Our planners quickly fill up with long getaway weekend vacations, beach road trips, family dinners and cookouts with friends, and happy hours where margaritas take top billing. Our valiant efforts come to a peak as we work to soak up every ounce of sunshine possible while simultaneously lathering ourselves with SPF 55+.
(This careful balance of sun vs. SPF is a constant, strange cosmetic war we have almost perfected, as we thank the self-tanner in our medicine cabinet.)
While summer sounds relaxing, sometimes I have to admit, it’s really the busiest time of the year. For a week or two in May, it feels like every weekend in June, July, and August are SO bereft of plans that we welcome Facebook Events that speak of that local Farmer’s Market on Sunday mornings and that Cat Adoption-Meets-Yoga Fusion Class every Tuesday at 7:00…AM. We agree to family vacations and make a few of our own. We take that capstone night course at grad school (AHEM…Stephanie, what were you thinking?) In fact, you decide to up and move your entire apartment just to kick off the Summer Solstice. (True story.) Why not? Summer lasts forever.
But suddenly, between the late night dinners, the last minute packing, and the four to-do lists…summer doesn’t seem like it’s going to last forever anymore. Summer is here and it’s demanding.
This, at least for now for me, this is what summer is. Maybe it’s the Type A personality in me, but even though it fills up my planner and seems a bit daunting as I sit here in only the first few weeks of June…I kind of like it. Balance, of course, is key. Vacations and time off are essential (email off and phones away), but knocking items off your to-do list are essential too.
Before it flies by, here’s a bit of advice for a successful summer:
- Think Big Picture – What are three specific goals you are hoping to achieve by Labor Day? (Work or play.) For instance, “1) Read four celebrity memoirs 2) Pay off student loans 3) Get new porch furniture for family reunion”
- Say “No” – Really. You are going to get invited to a lot of birthdays, a handful of weddings, a few bridal showers, tons of happy hours, and maybe even something like that Cat Adoption-Meets-Yoga Fusion Class. Wednesday only has 24 hours! Friends (and strangers in that Yoga class will understand.) Staying in never felt better.
- Stick With It – That said, if you are that friend that always says, “We HAVE to catch up for coffee soon!” but that date never seems to happen…get it done! Check it off your list, get on with that coffee date and clear out your mental to-do list.
- Keep it Organized – I don’t know what I would do without my planner. If you don’t already have one, get one. My tip? Get one that lays open flat so you can write cleanly on it. Get it large enough that you don’t have to squint to read your own writing and not so large that it doesn’t fit in your bag for work. This, is your bible.
