{Glam} Line Up

March 17, 2013 in Glam: Style & Trends

Glam and Graffiti

These past few days have been quite the whirlwind! Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil for an Enactus project. Enactus is an international non profit that works to enable progress through entrepreneurial action.  Our team from the University of Pittsburgh is working to forge a partnership with an inspiring organization called Instituto Reciclar. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to see what comes from it!

Now settling back in Pittsburgh, the temperature serving up a nice blast of chilly weather as normal, the layers are coming back on. While some think mixing brown and black is a fashion faux pas, I find combining my two favorite colors is most rewarding. I played up the look by working with different textures. Like how the rigid line of the rusty bricks and the black drawn lines on the Nicole Miller dress contrast with the direction of my stance.

I can’t wait to share some of the sunny and funky pictures from Brazil! Stay tuned GG readers!

What To Wear: Valentine’s Day

February 11, 2013 in Glam: Style & Trends

Photographer & Stylist: Stephanie Alexis | Make Up: Courtney D’Angelo

With Valentine’s Day this Thursday, Glam and Graffiti has prepared a quick how-to editorial of how to glam up for any V-Day plan. I matched 3 fabulous girls and 3 great looks! Whether they are going steady or going single, each of these love struck girls dressed for the occasion. Read on!

Who are do you relate to most this Valentine’s Day?

Model, Hilary wears a deep, maroon lace shift dress with romantic, yet edgy, black and gold jewelry. Her plans? Dinner with her long-time sweetie at the funky, new Asian fusion restaurant in town.

Honest, loving, and her best friend, her man is everything she could ask for! But, didn’t he say to be ready at 6 pm…sharp? Where is he?

“For added drama, I drew a sharp, thin cat eye. It emphasizes the beginning of the eye shadow too.” - Make-Up Artist, Courtney D.

Is that him?

It is! Bring on the sushi!

First Date Stomach filled with butterflies, model, Joyce can’t contain her excitement for her afternoon date with the cute boy she met at work. She wants to look put together, but fun and flirty for her first date. Cue the light pink lip gloss!

A lower high heel or boot can still kick up the charm while keeping it casual. Note: Both models sport the same raspberry red. The height of the dress and the country brown vs. the midnight black shoe shifts the mood of the outfit.

Girls just wanna have fun! Just because your Valentine’s Day doesn’t involve a scene filled with chocolates, teddy-bears, and a Taylor Swift love song, does not mean you can’t still go celebrate! Model, Laura chose to celebrate with a girls night out. This va-va-voom look was spiced up by a bright, red lip and a red hot heel to match!

 Ready to dance!

“I applied the red lip with a fine brush and kept adding on the layers! You want to make sure the pigment stays throughout the night till the last song. For a bright, wide-awake look, I used an angled brush, dipped it in white eyeliner and lined the bottom lash line.” – Make-Up Artist, Courtney D.

{Glam} Cop Out

Sometimes picking out the perfect outfit to wear seems more difficult than figuring out how to keep the lights on during a Super Bowl. When you are in a rut, stick to your power colors. Those 1-3 solid colors that single-handily can make you shine. Mine? Electric blue, midnight black, and bright pink. All three make me feel put together, strong, and sure about my outfit in seconds. Plus, my pale skin tends to brighten against these colors in the summer and the winter.

Recently, I have developed a crush on the color blue and so it seems, has the entire fashion world! Esteemed nominees and leading ladies such as Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyrfried donned the red carpet at the 2013 SAG Awards in deep navy and cutting cobalt.

Is blue your power color? Find out! Leverage color to evoke certain moods this week. Does wearing a little black dress feel different than wearing the same number in emerald green? Disagree with the tips of your favorite fashion magazine? That’s okay! Find the color the makes you feel energized, powerful, and invincible.

Don’t make it hard on yourself this morning! Cop out, slip on your color, and hit the road feeling confident.

{Glam} Suit and Tie

January 22, 2013 in Glam: Style & Trends

CoverEdit

I frequently refer back to the Fall/ Winter Fashion trends that we just recently spotted gracing the brightly lit runways. It’s amazing to see them slowly trickle down into a women’s everyday wear. As you watch the newest look step out on that Fall day, you think to yourself, “Western fringe? Back to the Military?” And then, a mere three months later, major brands follow suit unleashing the hit trends. (Such as, the very popular army green/ leather jacket combo thanks to the inspired works by Victoria Beckham, Prada, and Salvatore Ferragamo.)

It’s exciting to see these killer designs on the street. (And, have the chance to afford them!) As a working woman, I have my eyes set on the power suit. I find strong shoulders with slick details are the key to the perfect blazer.

Suit and Tie was inspired by the long silhouettes and Gothic emotion of Valentino and Jill Sander and the suit structure from Miu Miu and Temperly London. To design my own look, I paired my ankle-brushing maxi-dress by American designer Nicole Miller with a sharp blazer by Ralph Lauren.

Puzzled at how to work your beloved winter trend? Take a look you love, and either pair them with other printed pieces to make a contrast or wear them with mono-tone pieces to keep your outfit well-balanced.

{Glam} Baby, It’s Cold Outside

December 4, 2012 in Glam: Style & Trends

As a young girl, due to the size and color of my younger sister’s winter coat, I nicknamed her “the marshmallow.” Once she slid that puffy, shapeless, white coat onto her small body, she immediately disappeared, overcome by the goose down feather lining and overall monstrous piece of outerwear.

As we search for warmth and shelter as the weather begins to mimic that of the North Pole, (the one without the candy canes and elves)  we find ourselves searching for something, anything that will keep us warm. Have you ever spent time creating an outfit in the morning only to then throw on your heaviest winter coat covering your beautiful work or your new shirt? Wearing that same shapeless, black coat everyday isn’t going to help your winter blues.

Around the same moment I referred to my young sister as a marshmallow, I realized that jackets can be warm and trendy and to promise to always find a flattering fit. Sometimes that perfect coat can take time to find. It’s frustrating! But, it is worth the wait.

Above are a variety of winter coats that not only have sense of style, but are perfect for every body shape. Double breasted buttons can give you a slimmer fit. A high-impact collar can attract attention to your pretty face and a belt can accentuate your curvy or tiny waist. Find one that is the best for you!

My favorite find of the season was an earlier Christmas gift from American Eagle. I am always wearing black in the winter and the bright two-tone color is so festive! I had sworn off puffy jackets for a long time believing that they were more fit for rolling in the snow and ski-resorts. I was wrong. This jacket stands as a great example of how there are coats out there with a flattering fit.
