Fashionista? Check. Entrepreneur? You got it. World traveler? Sì! Meet Katheryn Richardson, owner of the savvy and sartorial Rosewood Boutique in Sewickley. Read on to learn how this fashion design graduate from Philadelphia University landed in Pittsburgh, her packing essentials, and more about a special shopping event and celebration!
What inspired you to open Rosewood Boutique?
I had a store previously with my sister-in-law in Little Rock, AR. When we moved to Sewickley 5 years ago I knew I wanted to open my own store. What inspired me initially was when we lived in Hong Kong. Before I opened my first store I went to Hong Kong to buy merchandise to sell at a trunk show in Little Rock. It was such a success that we opened our first store!
Even though it’s a mere 30 degrees out, we’re still rooting for spring weather to stay! What trends can you not wait to wear this spring?
I’m obsessed with the off the shoulder detail that I’m seeing in shirts, rompers and maxi dresses. I love my shoulders so this is so my trend! Also, the floral patterns designers are putting out this season are very beautiful! And of course, there is always pretty lace tops and dresses that make a come back every season that I just can’t get enough of!
You are quite the world-traveler! What are 3 must-haves a globe-trotter fashionista should pack in her suitcase?
First of all, I’ve become an amazing packer! My daughter and I usually share a suitcase so I have to be really thoughtful with my packing. But I’m all about the perfect carry on bag. We have these amazing reversible totes that are perfect for travel and can turn into a beach bag too.
As for inside my bag— I always bring black leggings. They are essential to my travel and fashion game. They are perfect for the flight. Weather is so unpredictable that you might not want to pack a lot of jeans that take up room!
Next, I love to bring the perfect pair of nude/taupe shoes that can go with anything that I’m going to wear on my trip. Plus, my go-to curling iron that makes my hair look amazing no matter where I go! It pretty much gives you a blow out with out all the work!
What advice do you have for a young woman looking to start her own business?
It’s a 24/7 job. You will have to put in long hours, but if it’s your passion you probably won’t mind doing it! Make sure you know who your target market is and pick the right location to open your store in. Also, find a mentor or another #GirlBoss that can help you get started or tell you what to expect. There is a big community in Pittsburgh for woman entrepreneurs and lots of networking opportunities. Take advantage of these free groups!
