Let’s talk fast fashion. The high traffic, the twists and turns, the stylish and haute designs…wait, we’re thinking of the same thing…right?
Cue Samantha Lugo, owner and founder of Broke Little Rich Girl, Pittsburgh’s latest chic boutique…on wheels. I met her a sunny Saturday while strolling and shopping the Strip District. Bubbly and spirited, she immediately welcomed me to her beautifully decorated new
store truck. I was in awe. First, the fact that my 5’11” stature didn’t have to duck to enter made the shopping incredibly relaxing. Second, her picks rocked! I loved her mix of hard and soft trends from chambray and leather to chiffon. Love what you see? I had the chance to interview this on-the-go Fashionista. Read on below!
GG: When did your interest in fashion first begin?
SL: I have always loved fashion. I grew up around a lot of women who had their own unique sense of style. When I was younger, I would try to create my own clothes using my grandmother’s scarves.
GG: How fun! Where did you go to school? How did that benefit you in the long run?
SL: I went to school at Robert Morris University and majored in Corporate Communications. That degree gave me the skills to develop my business plan and market myself.
GG: Learning to market yourself is a powerful tool. Let’s switch back to fashion…what’s your personal style? Does anything or anybody inspire your style?
SL: My personal style is trendy and classic, but I also occasionally like to mix in retro or vintage pieces into my look. My mood influences my style so it’s constantly changing. I use that thought process when choosing pieces for my truck.
GG: Where did the name “Broke Little Rich Girl” originate?
SL: I wanted women to know that they don’t have to spend a ton of money to look good. You can be “broke” (or not have a lot of money to spend on fashion), but you can find affordable pieces in my shop and look “rich”.
GG: I thought you did a great job picking statement pieces that offered a reasonable price. The readers want to know – what’s your best advice for an aspiring entrepreneur?
SL: Never give up and always prepare for the worst knowing that you probably didn’t prepare enough.
GG: That’s smart. Always have a back-up plan! Do you have a role model?
SL: My role model is my mother. She wakes up at 2:45 AM in the morning and commutes 2 hours to work. She doesn’t get home until 9:00 PM and still finds time for her family. When I feel like giving up, I just think of her and keep going strong.
GG: So, here’s the tough question – where do you hope to see Broke Little Rich Girl, Inc in 3 years?
SL: I hope to see a fleet of BLRG trucks in cities around the country! That would be my ultimate dream.
“Fear is stupid, so are regrets” – Marilyn Monroe
“I Need your Love” by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding – I love the upbeat sound and anything I can dance to! And, yes. I most definitely dance in my truck…but only when it’s parked!
I wanted to be an astronaut, a firefighter, a princess, and boss of the world…I still may want to do those things :)
Basic black t-shirt. I can dress it up with a big chunky necklace, button earrings, a great pair of skinny jeans and pumps, or dress it down with a pair of high top sneakers, boyfriend jeans, and hoop earrings. Jennifer Lopez! At 43, she can still rock a shiny, gold leotard better than anyone I know.
Well, isn’t that the truth! Thanks, Samantha!
